** NOTE: There is positively no way I could ever name all of my favorite female authors, these are the ones that came to mind at this moment. 1.... Laurell K. Hamilton I was first drawn in by her Anita Blake series via the book Circus of the Damned, and was forever trapped. Vampires, Werewolves, & Necromancy Oh Yeah! I am currently reading the latest edition of the Meredith Gentry series about the land of fairies, and am equally hooked. With Ann Rice gone from this genre, Hamilton definitely fills the void. 2.... Jan Karon I was drawn in like many others into the wonderful Mitford books. While about a priest there is so much more within this series it is an awesome set of reads. I cannot wait to read her newest book, Home to Holly Springs. 3.... Lilian Jackson Braun Her The Cat Who... series not only includes two frisky felines, but a great main character Qwilleran, that brings an appeal to male readers as well. I cannot even remember which was the first I read, but I spent a year reading everyone I could find. 4.... Jennifer Chiaverini She writes the popular Elm Creek Quilt series, that not only got me interested in quilting but is full of amazing characters. I am also proud to say she comes from my home state of Wisconsin. 5.... Sophie Kinsella brings humorous chick lit to brand new heights with her Shopaholic series and other books. I have read all of her books released to date and could not say one was better than the other. 6.... Anne Rice The classic author of old. It was her Mayfair Witches and Vampires that drew me in and are where my heart really remains. The Witching Hour was the first book of hers I read, and I couldn't read them fast enough. Anne suffered tragedy, and has returned now to her Catholic faith, and a new form of writing. I have read Christ The Lord, and while it is good, it lacked much of the feeling Anne once put into her writing in my humble opinion. I liked the story, but felt she left so much open. 7.... V.C. Andrews I was trapped by The Flowers in the Attic series, and a serious fan until the ghostwriter took over. My favorite book will always be My Sweet Audrina. Was I the only one to feel bothered that the family had the ghost writer continue to write under the name after the few works in process were finished? 8.... Mary Higgins Clark I cannot even remember which was the first of her many wonderful suspense books I read but I know that the last one I read Two Little Girls in Blue was equal to everything else in the great quality of writing you can expect. 9.... Tamar Myers Play It Again Spam, from the Pennsylvania Dutch Mysteries series was the first book that caught me by Myers. And I was hooked tongue and cheek because of the wit that the stories had and the great titles. In addition to the above series she also has The Den of Antiquity series as well. 10.... Rebecca Wells Ya Ya Extraordinaire, Siddalee Walker is the character that kept me reading, even though the Ya-Yas are definitely characters. 11.... Mary Janice Davidson I discovered this year via her Undead series, which I am still in the process of reading, but I love her style and mix of fantasy. 12.... Diane Setterfield, her debut book The Thirteenth Tale won the Quill Award for New Authors, and let me tell you it was well deserved. If you have not yet read this book, I highly suggest you do. 13.... Okay, can you blame a wannabe writer for this...Myself. I wrote often as a child, and went through college continuing to write and take classes on writing. I have actually published a number of nonfiction articles via Oxygen Media and am now working on maybe selling a novel in the next few years. I'm looking for new stuff to read. I'll have to check some of these out. Thanks for the ideas.
I am not a huge Jan Karon fan, but I see that she has a new book out, Home in Holly Springs. There is a town called Holly Springs very close to where I live...wonder if it is related?
I agree with your take on Diane Setterfield. The Thirteenth Tale was one of my favorites of this past year and I will look forward to her follow-up!
I think it's a shame that the ghost writer was allowed to keep writing under V.C. Andrews name.
There are noticable differences in the writing styles and IMO the ghost writer stories don't and could NEVER hold a candle to V.C. herself.
Love Ann Rice and I think I've read a few Sophie Kinsella as well. Go you for adding your own name to the list!
I really like Anne Tyler. All of her characters are seriously dysfunctional, but in a hilarious way. Cinncinati chili is just different, it's got a hint of sweetness in it because it uses cocoa and cinnamon. If you've never had the chance, try it.
Bookmarked and forwarded to all the English teachers in the school!
The Ya Ya Sisterhood is one of my favorite books ever, ever.
Completely agree with you on the VC Andrews ghostwriter, Penelope. I was a voracious VC reader as a teenager, and when the ghostwriter took over, I persisted for a while, and then gave it up as a dead loss. Such a shame, as I just loved Flowers in the Attic. I seem to remember really enjoying My Sweet Audrina too. I'd love to go back and re-read them, but not till the thesis is finished!
I'll definitely have a look in my library for some of these writers... thanks for the tips :)
Thanks for the comment on my blog, I've never heard of those meds... not sure if they'd be available in the UK, but I'll keep my eye out for something similar the next time I'm at the pharmacy.
I've read most of them, but can't say they're among my favorites. :) I'm totally a sucker for a JR Ward now, though, that I've finally picked up Dark Lover!
And I'm one of my favorite female writers too. Go self-esteem!
I love Mitford and Mr.Q and the Elm Creek Quilters, too!
And I just was stunned by The Thirteenth Tale!
Great list!
I will have to try some of these other authors.
I got in trouble in class many times while getting caught reading the Flowers in the Attic series under the desk during a lecture. I couldn't put it down. Great list and Happy TT!
Sounds like a great list! I've read all of Sophie Kinsella, but have some catching up to do as far as the others go! I'm looking forward to getting to know a lot of new authors when I move to the States.
I am always looking for a great read and this is a very useful list. Thanks!
a couple of new ones for me! guess i'm going in search of fresh reading material today! thanks for sharing and happy tt!
I love it when people do posts like this! I have only read two of the authors listed, so now I have a bunch more to try!! Thanks.
Happy TT
I used to love the Cat Who series but they don't hold my attention like they used to. Happy TT.
I really like Isabel Allende. Great list, btw. Happy TT. :)
Illiterate soul that I am, I've never read any of these. I am glad that you put yourself on the list, though. That is plucky!
TM
You have one of my favorite authors on that list plus one who may become a favorite.
When I was a small child and first learned to use the telephone, there were no dials much less buttons of the phone. To call someone, you picked up the phone, clicked the hang-up thingie twice, and told the operator the telephone number you wanted to call.
Wow nice list of authors!! I am way impressed. The only female author I can think of right off the bat is Merrilee Browne Boyack - author of "Strangling your Husband is NOT an Option" and "The Parenting Breakthrough"....but I don't read a whole lot, even though I enjoy it.
That's awesome that you're a writer and want to publish a book. I always thought about writing... but that's about it. Take action!
Love Ann Rice, V.C. Andrews, some times Mary Higgins Clark
I'm glad you included yourself in the list!
Thats a wonderful list and gives me lots of ideas for books to read! Thanks for visiting!
Mary Higgins Clark is the only author on the list I read, and I love her. I own quite a few of her books.
Happy tt, my friend.
Great list of writers! I'm always on the look out for new voices. Thanks for sharing!
~Harris.
I like most of those mystery writers. Mary Janice Davidson is a new discovery that I'm getting a lot of amusement out of.
Hey, I just saw Emily. You're one of my favorite writers too, lol.
I am so embarrased to admit that I have only heard of 3 of those women. I have some work to do, I see.
Some old faves and some new names! Stuff to check out!
I can't tell you how many times I read the V.C. Andrews books when I was younger.
I'm an avid reader. Two of my favorite female authors are Jodi Picoult and Dorothea Benton Frank.
I wish I had more time to read. When I do, I'll definitely check out some of the writers on your list.
What Louisiana girl doesn't love Anne Rice? I remember the loving the original VC Andrews books as well.
Thanks for stopping my and commenting on my TT ~ I fantasize about hurling these and many more snarky comments about my underlings.
I used to really like V C Andrews, but she doesn't write anymore. I think she passed away. I still like them, I guess. Anne Rice and Mary Higgins Clark - good ones, too. I'll have to check into the rest.
Anne Rice's Mayfair Witches series is one of my favorites series ever.
Mary Janice Davidson's Undead series is great, I'm waiting for my library to get the newest one in...can't wait to read it.
V.C. Andrews' My Sweet Audrina & Flowers in the Attic series are my favorites of hers too! I'm not pleased about the ghostwriter...I can tell the difference...so I don't read the new ones.
I really liked The Thirteenth Tale too. I wonder when she'll have a new book out. Thanks for letting me know about your book blog. :)
Great list of authors!
You GO girl for including yourself!!
My favorite would be Mary Higgins Clark, and the Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood, I really enjoyed reading.
Happy Thursday to you!
Great list, I love Anne Rice and Mary Higgens Clark as well. For female authors I really also enjoy Tess Gerritsen and Tami Hoag. Thanks for stopping by my TT.
I remember reading the V.C. Andrews book when I was a teenager and I loved them. I recently enjoyed the Shopaholic books - great reading.
I think our tastes in literature don't cross. I've only heard of one of these.
Thanks for visiting my T13 yesterday; 13 Quips Heard During Colonoscopies. Sorry it took so long to get back to you.
I read Flowers In The Attic many, many years ago. I have also read a few by Mary Higgins Clark. They make very good holiday reading.
I love #'s 4, 5, & sometimes 10. A new Jennifer Chiaverini book is one of those great pleasures of my life (along with a new Diane Mott Davidson, Earlene Fowler, or Joanne Fluke).
I wasn't too keen on Tamar Myers, though. Maybe I just caught the wrong one.
This is an awesome TT idea! Thanks for the visit!
I share a few of these, and I think it's great that you put yourself on the list. LOVE IT!
Thanks fr stopping by and participating in my interactive TT. I'm just making my rounds now, and am glad I stopped in.
